Citrix: IMA Service Won’t Start?

So you are looking at your services and notice Citrix seems pretty broke. MFCOM is stuck at starting… and just will not start. IMA is stopped, and Citrix WMI won’t start. You are getting all kinds of error messages in the event log like:

The server {8234912E-2BF4-46B0-9C6A-F923F1D1D4C9} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
Failed to load plugin C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\System32\Citrix\IMA\SubSystems\ImaAppSs.dll with error IMA_RESULT_WRITE_TO_LOG_FAILED
Failed to load initial plugins with error IMA_RESULT_WRITE_TO_LOG_FAILED
DCOM got error “1068” attempting to start the service CitrixWMIService with arguments “-Service” in order to run the server:
{FEE3BCB9-145C-42B1-B4F9-4A117FEBA464}

And also… I checked my DCOM applications and CitrixLogServer was just straight missing.

Wow what happened? Well Citrix says “If I could answer that, I would be making a lot more money than I do now”…

Well the fix was pretty simple at least.

Repair #1

You need to run a repair of the Citrix program. Do this by going to Program and Features, clicking Citrix XenApp Ver (I’m at 6.0) and repairing. Reboot

Get IMA to start

Well apparently this is a Citrix common item because the Citrix tech went straight to this registry key and changed it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Citrix\IMA\RUNTIME

Then blanked out the following keys:
CurrentlyLoadingPlugin
ProductPlugins

After that, IMA magically starts and all services come back up and running.

Repair #2

You need to run a repair again of the Citrix program… Do this by going to Program and Features, clicking Citrix XenApp Ver (I’m at 6.0) and repairing. Reboot

After that, everything seems to be working properly.

  1. We use Citrix extensively and have found it to be extremely reliable. Like any IT company, we have various issues that thankfully keeps us in a job. Do you remember having to reboot whenever anything was done in the “old” NT4 days? Citrix is definitely a leader in the industry in their realm and I’m thanful for them every day. The issue you described above is relevant but definitely not the norm.

    Thanks for commenting. I posted this to help people with the issue of your IMA service not being able to start. Anything else is just flavor text, not exactly a bash on the product itself.

    The Wow6432Node is a 64 bit only registry key. This was done is Xenapp 6 which is 64-bit only. You will need to access the key without that wow64 key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\\Citrix\IMA\RUNTIME

    I don’t have any experience if this is a problem in other versions of XenApp though.

  5. Awesome!!!!!!! Clearing out the second regkey you mentioned worked great for the IMA service. The first key didn’t exist. Now how do I get the !#@!!@#$ WMI service started? Why can’t Citrix make an install easy…everytime!

  6. I followed & managed to start IMA service.
    Post to this, when i run qfarm /load.. its say kindly get Citrix admin right to see the same.

    Whey this is appearing?
